Building your own model trains is an exciting hobby. As a matter of fact, it can even make you feel like a child, wondering and admiring the beauty of these miniature wonders. You can really admire the great scenery and layout of the track as the model train passes by. Model trains come in different sizes, and the G scale model trains are some of the more common sizes found today.
There are four common sizes or scales of model trains. The G scale belongs to the larger models. Smaller scales are more common for enthusiasts who prefer to build tracks indoors. The larger scale models can also run on tracks made indoors, but they usually take up much space. Many model train builders use the G scale models for tracks that they have designed outdoors in their gardens.
G scale model trains have a ratio of 1:22, meaning the model is reduced to about one twenty-second the size of the real locomotive. This is actually the biggest of the common model train sizes. The next biggest size to it is the O scale models, which measure only 1:48 to the actual size. The O scale models are approximately half the size of the G scale models. Typically, the G scale model trains measure about 26.7 inches long and 6.0 inches high. For comparison, the O scale models measure only about 16.1 inches in length by 3.6 inches high.
G scale model trains are usually large. Most people refer to these trains as “Garden Railroading” because they are mostly set up on gardens. This is where the name “G scale” comes from. It may also have been a reference to the German word groß, which literally means big. The trains are designed to run on the No.1 gauge tracks, which has 45mm of space between each of the rails.
The G scale model was first designed in Germany by Ernst Paul Lehmann Petentwerk. The company that made the first G scale model trains is referred as the LGB or Lehmann Gross Bahn, which means “Lehmann Big Train” in English. This company, which started in 1881, had a branch in the USA called the LGB of America.
One thing that made the G scale model trains perfect for outdoor tracks is its durability. Usually, the tracks for the train are made of brass. This does not require maintenance unlike the materials used for the tracks of other scales. The users would only need to wipe the tracks with a clean cloth, and the train would be ready to go.
Small children would really enjoy the bigger scale model trains. They can play with it and enjoy it without worrying that it would be damaged beyond repair. These models can accept some abuse through the years.
Building model trains is a great hobby that children, parents, and other grown-ups would really enjoy. There are many sizes of train models to choose from, and all have their specific purpose. If you want your model train to be very durable and last through the years, the G scale model trains are the ones that you are looking for.
